Visceral manipulation (VM) was developed by an osteopathic physician and physical therapist, Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral. By assessing and treating structural imbalances between organs, membranes, fascia, and ligaments, visceral manipulation can facilitate the restoration of function to decrease pain and discomfort. This is an integrative approach to address fascial strains in the body created by illness, injury, surgical scars and adhesions, and posture. These strains have a cascading effect that can influence more than the musculoskeletal system that the fascia attaches to. The compensatory mechanism the body adapts to as a result will also impact the nervous system and various organ functions.
The patient is clothed during the treatment. Loose fitting clothes that allow for full body movement without restriction are highly encouraged. Assessment and treatment will be performed directly over the skin in the areas of restriction using soft manual forces. Specific techniques will be applied to evaluate and release existing tension patterns between the connective tissues and the deeper viscera. These gentle manipulations not only benefit the motion and function of the local organs but will also assist the body globally to self-regulate other systems impacted by the held tension pattern.
The intensity and duration of treatment vary between patients based on the restrictions found. The first session may last up to one hour with the subsequent sessions lasting 30-45 minutes. The subtle manipulation continues to work after each treatment. Some patients will experience immediate relief while some patients report a greater resolution of symptoms a few days after the treatment once the body had a chance to integrate the changes. Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled every 2-4 weeks.
Visceral manipulation is a great standalone treatment or as adjunctive therapy to naturopathic management of various gastrointestinal conditions, such as reflux, constipation, diarrhea, gastric pain, nausea, bloating, post-op scar tissue/adhesion*, etc.
Dr. Yang is trained in visceral manipulation through the Barral Institute. The description above is modified from their website. For more information about visceral manipulation, please visit https://www.barralinstitute.com/.
* Please consult with your surgical team to make sure proper wound healing has taken place prior to any visceral manipulation directly over the abdomen. Similarly, if you have osteoporosis or are on an anti-coagulant, deeper techniques may be contraindicated.
